Worked example: 50,000 MT dry bulk voyage (amounts in USD)

Voyage time

50,000 MT loaded at 8,000 MT/day and discharged at 8,000 MT/day gives 6.25 days at each port. With 4 days of turn time, WORKING TIME is 16.5 days. Adding 6 laden and 3 ballast sailing days gives a voyage of 25.5 days.

Bunkers

IFO: 3 ballast days at 19 MT/day (57 MT), 6 laden days at 20 MT/day (120 MT) and 16.5 port days at 5 MT/day (82.5 MT), 259.5 MT in total at 950 per MT, or 246,525. MGO: 16.5 port days and 9 sea days at 0.1 MT/day, 2.55 MT at 1,150 per MT, or 2,932.5.

Voyage cost and commission

Bunkers of 249,457.5, port costs of 35,000 and 40,000, CLEAN H 10,000, CAPTAIN 5,000 and OTHER 3,000 give a voyage cost of 342,457.5 before hire. Commission at 3.75% on a freight of 14 per MT for 50,000 MT is 26,250.

Reading the daily hire table

At a daily hire of 13,000 the voyage costs 342,457.5 + 13,000 x 25.5 = 673,957.5 and the FREIGHT RATE row shows 14.00. At an offer of 14 per MT the P/L row still shows a loss of 207.50, and BREAKEVEN FREIGHT is 14.01. TCE AT FREIGHT AIM shows that the voyage earns 12,991.86 per day at 14 per MT: a vessel hired above that rate loses money on this voyage.

Units, turn time and ballast

Enter quantity in metric tonnes, loading and discharge rates and bunker consumption per day, sailing and turn time in days, and bunker prices and costs in USD. TURN TIME is the total for both ports, including waiting. TIME OF BALLASTING is the passage to the load port; enter 0 if the vessel is already there.

How the freight rate is calculated

  1. Time at the load port is QUANTITY divided by LOAD/RATE; time at the discharge port is QUANTITY divided by DIS/RATE. WORKING TIME adds both port times and the TURN TIME.
  2. TOTAL TIME VOY is WORKING TIME plus the laden and ballast sailing time.
  3. IFO consumption is laden days times the LADEN figure, ballast days times the BALLAST figure, and WORKING TIME times PORT IFO. MGO is WORKING TIME times PORT MGO plus total sea days times MGO SEA.
  4. Voyage cost is the IFO and MGO bunker cost plus both EPDA figures, CLEAN H, CAPTAIN and OTHER.
  5. For each daily hire, COST is the voyage cost plus the daily hire times TOTAL TIME VOY. FREIGHT RATE is COST plus TOTAL COMM, divided by QUANTITY. TOTAL COMM is FREIGHT AIM times QUANTITY times COMMISSION.
  6. TCE AT FREIGHT AIM is FREIGHT AIM times QUANTITY, less TOTAL COMM and the voyage cost, divided by TOTAL TIME VOY. It is the daily hire the voyage earns at the freight aim, and the highest daily hire that still covers the voyage.
  7. P/L AT FREIGHT AIM is FREIGHT AIM times QUANTITY, less TOTAL COMM and COST, for each daily hire.
  8. BREAKEVEN FREIGHT charges COMMISSION on the breakeven freight itself: COST divided by QUANTITY times (1 - COMMISSION). It is rounded up to the cent, so it is the lowest freight that covers COST and commission at that hire.
  9. TURN TIME is the total for both ports. Waiting, weather and holiday time are not added separately: include them in TURN TIME. Canal dues, stevedoring, insurance and other voyage charges go in OTHER.

Frequently asked questions

What does this freight calculator do?

It turns a cargo offer and the vessel's figures into a full-voyage estimate: port and sea time, IFO and MGO consumption, bunker cost, port disbursements and the freight rate per unit of cargo for a range of daily hire levels.

How do I compare the result with the freight on offer?

Enter the offered freight as FREIGHT AIM and read TCE AT FREIGHT AIM: it is the daily hire the voyage earns at that freight, after voyage cost and commission. The P/L AT FREIGHT AIM row shows the result for each hire in the table. Do not choose the hire column whose FREIGHT RATE is merely closest to the offer, because a column just above the offer can still make a loss.

Why is commission based on the freight aim?

In the FREIGHT RATE row, TOTAL COMM is calculated once from FREIGHT AIM, QUANTITY and COMMISSION and added to the cost in every hire column, as in the original sheet. The BREAKEVEN FREIGHT row instead charges commission on the breakeven freight itself, which is the figure to use as the lowest acceptable freight for a given daily hire.

Which figures should I change first?

Quantity, load and discharge rates, laden and ballast sailing time and the port disbursements usually move the result most. Bunker consumption and bunker cost should match the vessel and the bunkering port.

Is the calculator free to use?

Yes. It runs in your browser, needs no sign-up and nothing you enter is sent or stored.

Have a dry bulk cargo to move?

Send the cargo type, quantity, load and discharge ports and laycan to SVC Marine to discuss freight and suitable tonnage.
