Jib crane repair at Hai Phong: AH36 steel renewal and load test
Published
SVC Marine repaired Jib Crane No.4 after damage during cargo discharge at Hai Phong, Vietnam. Our technicians went on board to inspect the damaged jib and define the crop-and-renew work. Our repair team renewed the damaged structure and reinforcement brackets using 10 mm AH36 steel, carried out the shipyard welding scope and returned the crane on board for assembly and load testing.
This case follows the structural repair from the onboard survey through fit-up, welding inspection and the return to the vessel. Below the job sequence, owners can find the wider jib and grab crane repair scope, hoisting and luffing wire requirements, NDT and class inspection points, safety preparations and the information needed for a repair quotation.

01
Jib Crane Repair in Hai Phong, Vietnam
A damaged jib crane can interrupt cargo discharge and leave the vessel with a lifting appliance that must be inspected before it is used again. Jib deformation, cracked brackets, damaged wire ropes, worn sheaves and hook-block defects need different repair scopes. Our technicians inspect the affected structure and crane functions so the worklist addresses the fault rather than proposing a general overhaul.
SVC repairs jib, grab, deck and provision cranes in Vietnam. Our fitters and welders undertake the commissioned mechanical and structural work; we supply specified wire ropes and replacement components, prepare the crane for the agreed NDT and surveyor inspections, and carry out the required function and load-test work.

The Hai Phong job: No.4 jib crane damaged during discharge
Jib Crane No.4 was damaged during cargo discharge. Our technicians surveyed it on board at Hai Phong and prepared the structural repair worklist from the damaged area and repair sketch. The class inspection points and the condition needed for safe return to service were part of that work plan.
The recorded repair sequence comprised the following steps.
- Survey the damaged jib crane on board and identify the affected structure.
- Prepare the repair plan from the damaged area and sketch.
- Crop and renew, or fair up, the damaged structure according to the repair scope.
- Renew the reinforcement brackets for the jib body.
- Fabricate the renewal sections with high-tensile AH36 steel, 10 mm thick.
- Present the fit-up to the class surveyor before welding.
- Carry out the repair and welding inspection at the shipyard.
- Complete UT and PT after welding where required by the inspection scope.
- Transfer the crane back on board and assemble it.
- Present the final accuracy checks to the class surveyor.
- Carry out the onboard load test after installation.
03
Typical Jib Crane Repair Scope
For a new jib crane repair, SVC sets the worklist from the crane type, safe working load (SWL), damage, steel thickness, access, vessel schedule, class requirements and spare-part availability. Owners can commission the applicable items below. A wire defect, a damaged bracket and a hydraulic fault do not automatically require the same work.
- Inspect the damaged jib and the adjacent load-bearing structure.
- Check the jib body, reinforcement brackets, pins, sheaves and wire condition.
- Mark the steel sections for crop and renewal.
- Remove the damaged plate, brackets or stiffeners.
- Fabricate the replacement steel parts and check their fit.
- Fit AH36 or the specified approved material for the repair.
- Weld the renewal sections and complete the required grinding and finishing.
- Prepare and perform the specified UT, PT or other NDT within the commissioned scope.
- Check hoisting wire, luffing wire, sheaves and hook block.
- Present the repair at the agreed class, surveyor and owner inspection points.
- Carry out the specified function checks and load-test scope after repair.
04
Grab cranes, hoisting wire and luffing wire
SVC also undertakes grab crane repairs, wire supply and selected crane component renewal in Vietnam. For a rope order, send the maker or existing rope specification, diameter, construction, length, end fittings and certificate requirements. Our supply team checks the specified rope against the requisition before delivery; the repair team plans installation and function checks where replacement is included.
The wider crane worklist can include:
- Grab crane repair and deck crane structural renewal.
- Provision crane and engine-room crane repair.
- Specified hoisting wire and luffing wire supply.
- Crane wire-rope replacement within the agreed repair scope.
- Sheave, hook-block and bearing checks.
- Hydraulic and mechanical fault finding.
- Preparation and execution of the required post-repair load test.
05
Crane Structural Repair and AH36 Steel Renewal
A jib body or reinforcement bracket carries lifting loads. Our welders therefore work to the agreed structural repair scope, with material, fit-up, welding and inspection points established before the damaged steel is removed. The repair plan identifies which parts can be faired and which require renewal.
The Hai Phong job used 10 mm high-tensile AH36 steel for the renewed section. The fit-up was inspected before welding. The shipyard repair work included welding inspection and the specified post-weld NDT. AH36 at that thickness is the material recorded for this job; a different crane repair must use the material and dimensions required for its own design.
06
NDT and Class Inspection
SVC prepares the repaired areas for fit-up checks, welding inspection, visual and dimensional examination, UT, PT and the final checks specified for the crane. Our team presents the work to the attending class surveyor at the agreed hold points and keeps the repair photographs and test records together for the owner.
The class surveyor determines the class inspection and acceptance requirements. SVC performs the commissioned repair and testing; our work records do not replace a class certificate. The repaired crane is returned to lifting service only after the required repair checks and tests have been accepted.
07
Onboard Load Test After Crane Repair
After structural repair, wire replacement or major component renewal, the crane may need an onboard load test. Our team establishes the required test load, suitable water bags or test weights, test area and attendance requirements with the owner and attending surveyor before starting. The vessel condition and class instruction determine the test scope.
The test checks the agreed lifting functions, including brake holding, hoisting, luffing, slewing and structural response under the controlled load. SVC records the test work and issues the completion records for its commissioned scope.
In the Hai Phong case, the recorded work stages included transfer to the shipyard, repair and welding inspection there, then transfer back on board, assembly and load testing. The original work photographs remain with this case.
08
When to request jib or grab crane repair
Send the defect description and photographs as soon as the affected crane and the vessel window are known. Typical reasons for an inspection or repair enquiry include:
- Crane damage during cargo discharging
- Jib body deformation or crack
- Broken reinforcement brackets
- Hoisting wire damage
- Luffing wire damage
- Abnormal crane noise or vibration
- Crane overload incident
- Grab crane malfunction
- Class or port state control comment
- Failed crane load test
- Pre-drydock or post-repair crane inspection requirement
09
Safety Notes for Jib Crane Repair
The repair team and vessel agree safe access, machinery isolation, the lifting plan, staging, fire watch and hot-work permissions before work begins. Removed or suspended crane components must be securely held during dismantling, fabrication and assembly. Work at height and tensioned wire ropes need their own controls within that plan.
Keep a damaged crane out of lifting service until the repair condition, inspections and required load test have been checked. Cargo delays do not justify temporary use of damaged load-bearing members. Our technicians identify the work and inspection stages with the vessel so the crew and cargo personnel know when the crane remains unavailable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does SVC Marine repair jib cranes in Vietnam?
Yes. Our technicians, fitters and welders repair jib and grab cranes, renew damaged deck-crane structures and undertake the specified wire, NDT and load-test scope. Send the fault, crane particulars and vessel location so we can prepare the worklist.
Can SVC Marine supply hoisting wire and luffing wire?
Yes. Our supply team checks hoisting wire, luffing wire and other crane ropes against the specified diameter, construction, length, end fittings and certificate requirements. If fitting is required, include it in the enquiry together with the access and crane schedule. Supply and installation are quoted as the required scope. We quote the specified rope and installation scope after checking availability for the vessel window.
Is load testing required after jib crane repair?
A load test may be required after structural repair, wire replacement or major component work, or on class instruction. SVC prepares and carries out the commissioned test with the required load and records. The owner, superintendent and class surveyor establish the requirements for the particular crane.
What steel material may be used for crane structural repair?
The crane design and repair requirement determine the material. This Hai Phong job used high-tensile AH36 steel, 10 mm thick. Our team checks the specified renewal material and fit-up for each repair before welding; the case material is not a universal specification for every crane.
What information is needed for a crane repair enquiry?
Send vessel particulars, the port or anchorage, ETA and available repair window, crane maker/model and SWL, damage photographs, defect description, repair sketch if available and class or surveyor instructions. For wire supply, include the rope specification, length and certificates. Use the repair email above so our team can address the damaged structure and the required tests in the quotation.
