Vietnam’s Drydock Advantage: Turning Ship Repair Into a Strategic Edge

Published

SVC Marine's appointed superintendent boards the vessel, checks the repair list against visible conditions, compares yard quotations and attends the work in dock. SVC records progress, measurements, tests and open items for the owner. The dock, vessel, appointed agent, class and authorities each retain their own access, formalities and approval decisions. The work is planned against the survey requirements, budget and docking window.

Drydock Access, Agent and Yard Responsibilities

SVC checks the vessel's ETA, repair list, survey dates and docking window with the master and yard before it prices an attendance scope. Our superintendent identifies the boarding point, safe access, berth or dock period and documents needed to inspect the work. The yard confirms the slot, facilities and site permits. The responsible ship agent, customs declarant and authorities complete or decide the applicable crew, port, customs and spare-parts formalities within their own roles. SVC records any missing input and tells the owner which responsible party must resolve it.

Crew transport, a shore delivery or another local task is a separate SVC appointment when requested. It does not make SVC the port authority, customs broker or ship agent for the vessel.

Owner’s Representation at the Yard

Where appointed as the owner's representative, SVC's superintendent boards the vessel, inspects accessible repair areas with the crew, checks drawings and defect records, and turns the owner's priorities into a measured yard worklist. SVC compares and negotiates yard quotations item by item, including quantities, exclusions, tests and likely variations. The owner decides the budget and appointment.

During docking, SVC attends the workface, checks completed stages against the agreed list, photographs concealed work when permitted and examines available measurements and test records. SVC challenges a variation with the yard before it goes to the owner for approval, and reports schedule and cost changes. The yard performs its contracted tasks; the attending class surveyor decides class acceptance.

Repair and Coating Attendance

For a coating worklist, SVC checks the specified surface-preparation standard, access, environmental readings and material identification before watching primer and subsequent coats. Our record distinguishes a stage actually seen from a yard or applicator record supplied later. If SVC's own crew is separately commissioned to apply coating, that application scope and its checks are stated in the work order; attendance alone is not a claim that SVC applied every coat or certified the system.

Survey-related items may include tailshaft withdrawal, rudder and boiler maintenance, engine overhauls and pump repairs. SVC checks the agreed worklist, witnesses the stages and measurements included in its appointment, and gathers the relevant completion record. A component not opened, a test not witnessed or an inaccessible area stays explicitly open in the report.

Equipment and Survey Work

The drydock list can include NDT attendance, oil analysis and ballast-water-treatment-system work. SVC identifies the item, access point, witness requirement and document due from the appointed specialist. The supplier or inspector issues its own result; class and authorities make statutory or class decisions. SVC does not turn a pending test or a supplier assurance into a passed result.

For chemical tankers, valve supply and testing are checked against the specified service, material, pressure and document requirements. For container vessels, SVC can supply lashing materials and carry out commissioned cell-guide repairs with its steel team. The repair method, hot-work controls, measurements, NDT and class attendance are defined for the actual vessel and recorded under the work order.

Accountability in Every Report

SVC's dated owner report identifies each work item, the person or party responsible, the stage inspected, photographs and measurements actually taken, test evidence received and defects still open. It separates yard work, SVC's own commissioned work and specialist reports. Class and authority submissions remain with the appointed parties; SVC records their status rather than declaring approval.

For a drydock enquiry, send the vessel's principal particulars and dimensions, berth or yard preference, docking dates, survey due items, photographs, defect list, drawings and any maker or class requirements. State which tasks require SVC's own technicians, which require owner-side supervision, and which tests need a witness. SVC returns a scope and decision list for the actual project, not a blanket promise of yard availability or survey acceptance.
