Plan a load the ship can handle
We pack the goods around the ship’s lifting and receiving arrangements. Mark heavy, long, fragile or awkward packages with the handling information available for them. A machinery part and cartons of routine consumables may need different transfer and receiving arrangements.
Confirm who will accept the packages and whether the full load can be received at once. If technical attendance is also required to fit a component, quote its isolation, removal, installation and checks separately rather than assuming that fitting comes with stores delivery.

Reconcile receipt and keep the balance identifiable
We reconcile the receipt and maintain an identifiable balance list. Record the goods actually presented and received, with short, returned or mismatched lines kept visible. The receiver should be able to allocate a package without relying on an informal description from an earlier message.
For a later supply, use the outstanding line quantities and the revised receiving instruction. A changed berth or a different accepted equivalent needs an updated record. Keep the prior receipt attached to the goods that were actually delivered, rather than rewriting the entire order as one completed total.
