Underwater inspection in Nha Trang, Vietnam

Published

A suspected contact mark, an unfamiliar vibration or marine growth can make an underwater check urgent during a Nha Trang call. Tell SVC Marine what the crew has observed, which submerged area needs attention and how long the vessel will remain at its berth or anchorage. SVC divers inspect the agreed areas, make identifiable still-image or CCTV records and report the visible condition. Cleaning, polishing and any repair are separate work decisions.

01

Start with the fault and a located worklist

For hull plating, identify the side and approximate frame or compartment reference if known. For a propeller concern, tell us whether the crew reports vibration, visible blade damage, rope entanglement or loss of performance. Rudder, sea chest, intake grid and overboard fitting questions each need their own named location. Previous photographs or a drawing help the dive team orient the views; an uncertain location should remain marked as uncertain until inspected.

SVC sets out the nominated inspection areas before attendance. Our divers record close views that show the suspected finding and wider views that locate it on the hull or fitting. The report distinguishes what was visible, what was obscured by water, access or growth, and what requires a further inspection or technical decision. A visual dive does not become a thickness measurement, NDT result, drydock examination or class approval merely because video was recorded.

02

Agree access and safety at the actual Nha Trang position

Give the exact berth or anchorage, vessel draught if relevant to the work area, ETA, ETD and an onboard contact. The vessel team should identify propulsion, thruster, sea-suction and overboard arrangements that affect safe diving and any isolation needed. SVC checks the appointed work window and the local permission and environmental conditions for the proposed activity. The scope is confirmed for that position; an anchorage instruction is not interchangeable with a berth instruction.

If visibility, current, traffic, access or permission prevents a requested view, the report must say so. We do not describe an unseen fitting as satisfactory or promise that every submerged area can be reached on one attendance. Where a class-related underwater inspection is sought, send the class-specific requirement in advance so the surveyor, vessel and diving team can agree the evidence and attendance needed. The classification society retains its own acceptance decision.

03

Keep inspection, cleaning and propeller work distinct

An inspection first records condition. If the nominated hull surface is fouled, the owner can then specify cleaning areas, coating information and any restrictions on the method. SVC records the areas actually cleaned with before-and-after views where they can be obtained. Propeller polishing has its own blade-condition and surface-work scope; suspected blade damage belongs in a separate repair decision. Sea chest or intake cleaning also needs the engine department's suction and isolation information.

Inspection, hull cleaning and polishing may be planned for the same call when the work window and permissions allow, but the quotation and handover should keep their tasks and evidence separate. This lets the superintendent see whether a photograph documents a pre-work finding, a completed cleaning area or a condition still requiring repair. For the broader methods and limits, see dive guide and the propeller guide.

04

UWI report scope: hull, rudder, propeller and underwater openings

For a Nha Trang underwater inspection, list the hull, rudder, propeller and underwater openings as identifiable report areas. Include a general arrangement or underwater fitting plan where available. Tell SVC whether the enquiry requires a condition record for the superintendent or evidence for an attending class surveyor, and send any surveyor’s instructions before attendance. Agree the still images, video coverage and report format against that purpose.

The attendance proposal should identify the diving team and equipment, working boat where required, transport and the local diving-permission arrangements. Keep these work and access items visible in the agreed scope instead of assuming that an inspection price includes every transfer or approval. Permission and any class attendance are confirmed for the actual vessel position and working window. A photographic record is evidence of the observed areas; it is not by itself a class certificate.

05

Sea-chest and stern-tube-area cleaning need their own worklist

Identify each sea chest and its position, the requested grid or opening surfaces and the boundary of any cleaning. Use the vessel’s actual count and arrangement; do not copy a sea-chest count from another ship. Keep inspection of the openings, removal of growth and any work involving opening a grid distinguishable. The vessel and diving team agree the necessary access and isolation before that scope is accepted.

For the propeller-shaft or stern-tube area, name the external surface to be examined or cleaned and the views required in the report. External cleaning does not establish internal bearing condition, seal condition or a completed repair. Record the inspected and cleaned areas separately, with pre- and post-work views where obtainable, and identify any inaccessible areas left for a further decision.

06

Underwater hull cleaning in Nha Trang: define the surface and coating

A cleaning enquiry needs more than the vessel length and a request for divers. Tell SVC which vertical sides, flat-bottom areas and appendages are included, and send the coating information with recent fouling photographs. Distinguish slime from firmly attached growth and identify any damaged or exposed coating already visible. The intended cleaning method must be assessed against that condition, rather than chosen from a photograph of a different vessel.

Hull sides and niche areas need separate worklist entries. Sea chests, grids and other fittings have different access and vessel-side isolation requirements; a hull-cleaning instruction should not silently include opening or working inside them. If a proposed method requires capture or other environmental controls, confirm the applicable requirements and the actual available arrangement before accepting that scope. A quotation does not itself establish permission to clean at a particular berth or anchorage.

07

Record partial cleaning before the vessel departs

A short port call may leave only part of the requested surface accessible. SVC's completion record should locate each area actually cleaned, pair its condition photographs where obtainable, and identify areas left untreated or uninspected. Keep pre-existing coating damage and limits on visibility distinct from the cleaning result. A close view of one patch cannot stand for the whole underwater hull.

Give the superintendent a remaining-work list that can be used at the next attendance. Hull cleaning, propeller polishing and a condition inspection should each retain their own scope and evidence, even when undertaken in one working window. See the Vung Tau hull-cleaning and propeller-polishing work record for a separate completed-job example; that job is not presented as a Nha Trang attendance.

08

Nha Trang within the Khanh Hoa enquiry

Nha Trang, North or South Van Phong, and Cam Ranh/Ba Ngoi need separate position instructions. For Van Phong repair enquiries, identify Dam Mon, the My Giang area or the actual berth or anchorage; for Cam Ranh or Ba Ngoi, give the berth or bay position. This worklist therefore names the actual receiving position before diving is planned.

09

Also serving Son Duong, Vung Ang and Cua Lo

For a later call at Son Duong, Vung Ang or Cua Lo, send the remaining underwater worklist and its located records to SVC. Each position needs its own dive scope, safe working window and permissions. A Nha Trang inspection record can identify the areas needing further work; it does not establish that a later port’s inspection or cleaning has already taken place.

10

Questions before a diver attends

Can the same visit include hull cleaning?

It can be considered as a separately agreed scope when the vessel's position, coating information, port permission, environmental conditions and safe diving window allow it. Send the areas to be cleaned; do not treat an inspection booking as blanket cleaning authorization.

Is CCTV enough for a class survey?

CCTV and identified stills can document visible condition. A class-related survey needs its own agreed requirements and any surveyor attendance; SVC's visual record alone does not confer class acceptance.

What if the suspected defect cannot be seen?

The report identifies the area attempted and the visibility or access limit. It does not call the item sound without evidence. The superintendent can then decide whether another underwater method, repair investigation or drydock inspection is needed.

How are inspection and completed work shown in the handover?

SVC separates located inspection findings from the areas actually cleaned or polished. Identified images, coverage notes and remaining items let the owner compare the delivered work with the agreed worklist.

Can I book cleaning before the coating and fouling condition is known?

Send the coating record and recent condition views first. The method, affected areas and any local environmental conditions need to be considered together. SVC can define an inspection-first scope where the information is insufficient for a cleaning quotation.

What happens if only part of the hull can be cleaned?

The handover identifies the completed areas and the remaining areas separately, with located photographs where available. Agree any further attendance against that remaining worklist; do not describe partial cleaning as a whole-hull result.

What should I send for a Nha Trang quotation?

Send the exact berth or anchorage, ETA and ETD, the affected hull or fitting location, the crew's symptom or question, available drawings and photographs, any class instruction, and the required report format. Add the vessel-side contact and safe access window. Email the SVC repair and diving team; SVC can then quote the inspection and any separately requested cleaning or polishing work.
