Marine Steel Repair and Hot Work Support in Vietnam
Steel repair on board a vessel is not only a welding job. It requires proper work scope confirmation, safe access, hot work permission, material preparation, welder qualification, fire watch, isolation, ventilation, class requirement follow-up and clear reporting to the owner or manager.
SVC Marine helps owners coordinate steel repair and hot work at Vietnamese ports, shipyards and repair locations. Our role is to arrange suitable manpower, verify repair scope, coordinate with the master, chief engineer, yard, port, class and local contractors, and report the actual progress to the owner.
Our steel repair support is suitable for:
- Emergency onboard steel repair
- Port-based hot work and fabrication
- Drydock steel renewal support
- Class-related steel repair follow-up
- PSC deficiency rectification
- Deck structure and fitting repair
- Pipe welding and pipe support repair
- Hatch cover, coaming and cargo area repair
- Pre-delivery or post-purchase steel repair

2. Pipe Welding and Pipe Repair
Pipe leakage and corroded pipe sections can delay vessel operation, especially when the affected system is linked to cooling water, fuel, lube oil, bilge, ballast, fire main or deck service lines. We can coordinate pipe inspection, measurement, fabrication, welding, pressure test support and onboard installation follow-up.
- Pipe section renewal
- Flange and spool fabrication
- Pipe support and clamp repair
- Deck pipe and engine room pipe repair
- Ballast, bilge, cooling and service pipe support

3. Deck Repair and Fabrication
Deck repair often involves small but operationally important steel jobs. These works must be done safely, especially when the vessel is alongside, at anchorage or under cargo operation.
- Deck fittings and foundations
- Handrails, ladders and guardrails
- Small platforms and access arrangements
- Hatch cover-related steel repair support
- Mooring area repair support
- Sea fastening and temporary steel fabrication
- Pad eyes, brackets and minor structural items
4. Hatch Cover, Coaming and Cargo Area Repair

Emergency hot work remains subject to port approval, vessel safety permission, gas-free condition where applicable, fire watch and Permit to Work.
- Urgent welding team mobilisation
- Onboard inspection and measurement
- Material sourcing and workshop preparation
- Repair plan coordination with vessel and owner
- Fire watch and hot work safety support arrangement

Certified Welders and Fabrication Team
SVC Marine can arrange experienced welding and fabrication teams for suitable marine repair projects in Vietnam. Our welding team network includes certified welders and fabricators with practical experience from demanding industrial environments, including refinery, oil & gas, infrastructure and large-scale construction projects in the Middle East.
For vessel repair, welder certificates, WPS, PQR, material certificates, NDT requirements and class witness requirements shall be reviewed case by case depending on the repair scope and owner or class requirements.
- Experienced marine and industrial welders
- Welding certificate review where required
- Fitter, fabricator and hot work team arrangement
- Workshop and onboard fabrication support
- Owner, class and yard coordination
- Repair reporting with photos and completion records
SVC Marine does not claim that every hot work job can be done at every port or anchorage. Feasibility depends on port regulation, vessel condition, safety approval, access, hot work permit, weather, class requirement and local manpower availability.
Hot Work Safety and Permit Requirements
Hot work on board vessels is high-risk work. SVC Marine treats hot work as a controlled process, not simply a manpower arrangement. Before welding, cutting or grinding can proceed, the vessel and responsible parties must confirm safety conditions and required permits.
Depending on job location and vessel condition, hot work preparation may require:
- Permit to Work approval
- Hot work permit from vessel, port or shipyard
- Gas-free certificate where applicable
- Tank cleaning or isolation where required
- Ventilation for enclosed or confined areas
- Fire watch arrangement
- Fire-fighting equipment readiness
- Safe access, staging or scaffolding
- Lock-out, tag-out or system isolation
- Class or owner approval where required
All final decisions regarding hot work approval remain with the vessel master, ship manager, owner, port authority, shipyard, class society and other responsible parties.
Steel Repair at Port, Anchorage, Workshop or Drydock
SVC Marine can help owners select the most practical repair method based on time, safety, cost, class requirement and vessel schedule.
Repair at Berth
Suitable for selected steel repair, pipe repair, deck fitting, small fabrication and non-critical hot work where port and vessel safety approval are granted.
Repair at Anchorage
Possible for limited jobs depending on port permission, launch boat access, weather, job scope, fire safety condition and manpower availability.
Workshop Fabrication
Where onboard work is limited, steel parts or pipe sections can be measured, fabricated ashore and delivered back to the vessel for fitting or installation.
Drydock and Shipyard Steel Repair
For larger structural works, class-critical steel renewal, underwater damage, cargo hold repair or heavy steel jobs, drydock or shipyard repair is usually the safer and more controlled option.

Class, Owner and Documentation Follow-Up

- Class survey attendance coordination
- Welder certificate and document collection where required
- Material certificate follow-up where applicable
- NDT coordination where required
- Repair photo records before, during and after work
