BWMS / BWTS Retrofit Installation in Vietnam

SVC Marine handled ballast water management system retrofit installation work in Vietnam, including onboard execution with pipe and heavy equipment workers, electrical workers, anchorage attendance and owner-side reporting.

This was not an office-based retrofit case. The work required SVC Marine to stay with the vessel, follow the job onboard, control two working teams, solve site problems, handle material and access issues, and push the installation forward under difficult anchorage conditions.

The project involved two main working groups: one team for pipe work, heavy equipment handling and large-size installation work; and one team for electrical cabling, connection, wiring route and electrical completion items. SVC Marine followed both teams onboard and reported practical progress to the owner.

Project Overview

  • Project: BWMS / BWTS retrofit installation
  • Work Type: Ballast water treatment system installation
  • Location: Vietnam, including vessel attendance at anchorage / vessel side
  • Main Teams: Pipe and heavy equipment team; electrical team
  • SVC Marine Role: Onboard execution follow-up, manpower control, technical attendance, material and access follow-up, daily reporting to owner

Real Onboard BWMS Installation Work

BWMS retrofit work is a practical onboard job. It requires space checking, equipment landing, foundation preparation, pipe routing, cutting, welding, electrical cabling, cable tray work, penetration, connection, testing preparation and close communication with vessel crew and technical managers.

In this project, SVC Marine worked with the vessel and two field teams to execute the installation scope. The work required continuous onboard attendance because pipe team progress and electrical team progress had to move together.

If the pipe team was delayed, electrical work could be blocked. If the electrical team could not complete cabling or connection routes, testing and commissioning readiness could be delayed. SVC Marine followed the practical sequence and pushed the job forward from the vessel side.

Pipe Work and Heavy Equipment Team

The pipe and heavy equipment team handled the physical installation side of the retrofit. This part of the job required manpower, tools, cutting, fitting, welding, alignment, material movement and safe handling of large or heavy components inside the vessel.

Main work areas included:

  • Pipe routing review onboard
  • Pipe cutting, fitting and installation follow-up
  • Heavy and oversized equipment movement onboard
  • Foundation and steel-related fitting work where required
  • Connection to existing ballast water piping system
  • Valve, flange and spool installation follow-up
  • Hot work and site safety follow-up
  • Progress tracking and photo records

Electrical Team

The electrical team handled cable routing, wiring, connection and electrical completion items related to the BWMS / BWTS installation. Electrical work had to match the actual equipment position, power requirement, cable route, control panel location and vessel-side arrangement.

Main electrical work areas included:

  • Electrical cable route review
  • Cable tray and cable pulling follow-up
  • Control panel and equipment connection follow-up
  • Power supply and control cable work
  • Electrical termination and connection status tracking
  • Work between electrical team, pipe team and vessel crew
  • Testing readiness follow-up
  • Open item reporting to owner or manager

Anchorage Attendance and Communication Difficulty

A major practical challenge was vessel attendance outside port, where communication signal can be weak or unavailable. When the team is working at anchorage, simple office-style follow-up is not enough. Decisions must often be made onboard with limited phone signal, limited internet access and direct discussion with the vessel crew and working teams.

SVC Marine followed the job from the vessel side, handled practical site communication, checked team progress, collected evidence when possible and reported back to the owner when communication access allowed.

Anchorage work required:

  • Launch boat and vessel access follow-up
  • Tool, material and manpower movement to vessel
  • Working team attendance onboard
  • Progress checking without reliable mobile signal
  • Direct discussion with master, chief engineer and crew
  • Immediate handling of site constraints
  • Photo records and delayed reporting when signal was available

Site Execution Challenges

BWMS retrofit work can look simple in drawings but become difficult inside the vessel. Existing pipe routes, limited engine room space, equipment foundation, cable routing, hot work access, material movement and crew operation constraints can create delay if not handled properly.

Typical challenges included:

  • Limited working space inside machinery areas
  • Heavy equipment movement onboard
  • Pipe routing conflict with existing systems
  • Electrical cable route limitation
  • Hot work access and safety requirement
  • Material and tool movement by launch boat or port access
  • Working team sequencing between pipe and electrical jobs
  • Vessel crew operation requirements during installation
  • Communication difficulty at anchorage
  • Owner-side reporting under field conditions

SVC Marine’s Role

SVC Marine handled the job as a field-execution team in Vietnam. Our role was to keep the installation moving, follow both work teams, check practical progress and report actual site status to the owner.

Our work included:

  • BWMS / BWTS retrofit attendance
  • Pipe and heavy equipment team follow-up
  • Electrical team follow-up
  • Vessel-side attendance during onboard work
  • Anchorage access and launch boat follow-up where required
  • Tool, material and manpower movement follow-up
  • Progress tracking and photo reporting
  • Open item list follow-up
  • Communication with owner, manager, vessel crew and working teams
  • Practical issue handling during installation

Why This Case Matters

This BWMS / BWTS retrofit case shows the real difference between paperwork planning and onboard execution. The job required SVC Marine to work directly with pipe workers, heavy equipment workers, electricians, vessel crew and owner’s technical side under difficult field conditions.

The value came from practical presence: staying with the job, following the workers, checking progress, solving site constraints, collecting evidence and keeping the owner informed when communication access was available.

BWMS / BWTS Retrofit Work Scope

SVC Marine can handle selected BWMS / BWTS retrofit and installation-related work in Vietnam depending on vessel location, system maker, approved design, class requirement, yard condition, anchorage access and owner’s instruction.

Possible work scope may include:
