01
The fault onboard
The generator initially reached its operating voltage and frequency, then both indications fell to zero after several seconds. SVC Marine inspected the automatic voltage regulator (AVR), voltage-dependent resistor, diodes and engine-side condition to establish the repair scope.
02
Electrical and mechanical work
The published work record identifies crankpin grinding, renewal of the AVR and diodes, governor overspeed adjustment and rotor rewinding. It also records preparation for rotor interchange and the use of chain blocks for handling the rotor. These were linked electrical and mechanical tasks on the generating set.
03
Recorded result
The original repair update reports successful auxiliary engine repair and restoration of operation with two auxiliary engines working together. It includes photographs of diode renewal, AVR work and rotor handling.
04
Plan the attendance
For a similar failure, send the generator and alternator nameplate photographs, alarm history, voltage and frequency readings, port or anchorage, ETA and the available repair window. SVC Marine undertakes onboard fault finding, component repair and reinstallation.
05
Information for fault finding
- Generator and alternator maker, model and rated output
- Voltage and frequency readings at start and when the fault occurs
- AVR model, alarm history and recent component changes
- Engine symptoms and the condition of the other generating sets
- Port or anchorage, ETA, access arrangements and available repair window
